Why Downward Dog Deserves a Space in Your Yoga Practice

If you’ve been to a yoga class (or even just scrolled past one on YouTube), chances are you’ve seen Downward Dog. It’s one of those poses that seems simple—hands down, backside up—but once you get into it, you realise there’s a lot more going on there.

And here’s the thing: when you do Downward Dog well, it can feel amazing. It’s not just a “transition pose” between the fun stuff—it’s actually one of the most beneficial postures in yoga.

Why We Love Downward Dog

It’s a full-body reset – Stretching the back of your legs, opening the shoulders, and lengthening the spine all in one go. Perfect if you’ve been sitting at a desk or on your phone for too long.

It builds strength – Arms, shoulders, core, legs—Downward Dog wakes them all up and helps create stability for the rest of your practice.

It calms and energises at the same time – Because your head is below your heart, it’s a gentle inversion. That means better circulation and a little mood lift, without needing to flip all the way upside down.

It’s grounding – There’s something about settling into Downward Dog that feels steadying, like you’ve just hit the “reset” button on your mind as well as your body.

Why Alignment Matters

If you’ve ever felt like Downward Dog is more of a struggle than a stretch, you’re not alone. Done without the right setup, it can leave you with tight shoulders or cranky wrists. That’s why taking a moment to learn the alignment makes such a difference—it transforms the pose from “ugh” to “ahhh.”

I’ve recorded a step-by-step video for you inside the membership platform (part of the free membership), so you can follow along and get the foundations right. Once you nail the basics, Downward Dog will become a safe, steady, and energising friend.

Your Turn

Next time you roll out your mat, don’t rush through it. Pause in Downward Dog, take a few deep breaths, and notice how your body feels. With a little practice, you might just find it becomes one of your favorite places to hang out in yoga.
